What drives pest control cost in Midland, Texas

This site doesn't set prices, and it doesn't publish them. The company you speak with does. Here's what tends to change the price, and what to ask.

The pest

A single paper wasp nest under an eave is a small, well-defined job. Termites, bed bugs and German roaches are bigger. They need more inspection, more treatment or return visits, and termite work often comes with a warranty that has its own terms.

The size of the job

Square footage matters, but so does how far the problem has spread. So do access (a slab, a crawl space or an attic), the number of units in the building, and whether neighbors share the problem.

For termites, Texas A&M AgriLife says a proper inspection should end in a written report and a diagram showing where treatment goes. The extent of treatment on that diagram drives much of the price.

Visits

Count the visits. AgriLife says bed bug jobs usually need several, and its flea plan calls for follow-up about 5 to 10 days later. A low first price with paid returns can end up costing more than a higher one that includes them. Here's how visit plans differ.

Warranty and contract

The Texas Department of Agriculture says you may find a great deal of variation in contract terms, prices and treatment options. Review the terms, the renewal options and what could void a warranty. EPA suggests getting bids from two or three companies and looking at value more than price.

If you sign up because a salesperson came to your door, Texas's consumer sheet says you have 72 hours to cancel.

What to ask on the phone

  • Is there a charge for the inspection?
  • Is this a firm price, or could it change after you look?
  • How many visits does it include?
  • What happens if the pest comes back?
  • Will I get this in writing?
